Teachings & Singing

Luke gave a teaching entitled “Growing Up” for the second teaching block on Wednesday. Audio from the teaching was recorded (along with audio from all of the teachings) and will be included in the camp packets distributed at the end of the week. There was also some amazing singing and praising on Wednesday, probably some of the best singing we’ve ever heard at camp. Pictures from both events are included in the following photo set.

Sports, Sports, Sports!

What would camp be without some healthy competition? During afternoon free time many of the campers and staff engage in sports such as basketball, volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, kickball, and football. Wednesday particularly saw some great games of basketball and volleyball. Check out some photos from the games and read the caption below each photo for a description.

Archbishop Job + Water Balloons, and Hawaiian Luau

Tuesday was packed full of fun. We headed down to the old bridge to drop water balloons on unsuspecting canoers. With us was Archbishop Job, who was right on target with his water balloon bombs (I believe he had a direct hit to someone’s shoulder). Camp Rivervale kitchen staff donned Hawaiian apparel in the spirit of the Luau scheduled for later that night. After dinner, campers participated in the all camp olympic games, which included 5 groups rotating between 5 different olympic game stations. The stations consisted of 1) balancing an egg on a spoon and running an obstacle course, … Continue reading

Archbishop Job Arrives And Prisoners Are Captured!

Monday was a day of beautiful weather, great teachings, canoe trip water balloon bombings, and a whole lotta Prisoner’s Base. Seriously, there really was a lot of Prisoner’s Base. We skipped the campfire in favor of playing more. Daylight Savings Time will do that to you. We told everyone not to worry because we will have a campfire after our prayer walk on Thursday.

Our praise band is growing by the day. We have 3 bass players, including a classical stand-up bass. We also have a cello and a violin, along with the usual djembe drum, guitars, shakers, and tambourines. It is quite a beautiful sight (and sound!) and we will post some pictures from it possibly tomorrow. It should also be on this years’ camp video.

We had no problems with any campers on Monday and everyone is beginning to open up and get along very nicely. Archbishop Job and Rdr. Joshua Coolman showed up around dinner time and are staying with us until Tuesday evening. It is an honor to have had 5 priests/archbishops with us so far and it’s only the first full-length day!

Camp Kick-off Night

We kicked-off summer camp 2009 with a bang. Actually about 50 bangs. One of our ice-breaker games was the “balloon game” where campers tied balloons to their ankles and tried to stomp on others’ balloons and pop them. Campers also participated in “hip to hip”, and the tape-pulling-piggy-back game, which we still have not come up with a name for. Caleb Wilson took the reigns of the bull horn during the games and did a smashing job. Then we all went down to the cafeteria for Edna’s pizza (we must keep her in business) and brownies, and mingled a bit … Continue reading

Staff Night

Camp 2009 officially started on Saturday at 1pm with almost all of the 27 staff members showing up on time (it’s a miracle!). We believe it’s very important for the staff to have time to bond and prepare for the week of camp to come, and in order to do this we have a night devoted purely to the staff at the beginning of camp. This year our staff night was chalk full of pizza, thunderstorms, prayers, and swimming (not during the storms of course). After a 3 hour orientation meeting the staff proceeded to do evening prayers and head … Continue reading
